  6. Feeling is particularly difficult to isolate precise usages of this term since even the most technical are contaminated by popular connotations.

    1. Most generally, experiencing, sensing or having a conscious process. More specifically:
    2. A sensory impression, meaning a sensation such as warmth or pain.
    3. An affective state, as in a sense of well-being, depression, desire, etc.
    4. One of the dimensions of emotion, particularly in reference to the hypothesized elementary emotional continua, such as in Wundt's three dimensions of feeling.
    5. Belief, as in a vague opinion or notion about something not supported by any real evidence.

The difficulty with the term is that its use is nearly always metaphoric and somehow we all seem quite convinced that we know what we mean when we use it. See also EMOTION etseq., especially THEORIES OF EMOTION, for more on the terminology of this area of psychology.
